The Conquérants de Laval and Royal-Sélect de Beauport won the adidas U-16 Cup at the 2009 BMO National Championships in Winnipeg, MB. The Québec teams dominated their opposition on the final day as Laval won 4:0 over Alberta's South West United and the Royal won 8:0 over Ontario's Ajax United Magic.
"I am so proud of my players," said Laval's head coach Mohamed Yahmi. “The emotions of the moment are preventing me from explaining how happy I am."
In the boys' final, Laval's Alessandro Riggi scored a pair of goals to lead the offence. Laval's defence continued its strong play to complete the entire competition without giving up a goal.
Laval coach Yahmi has coached this group of players for the past four years. He identified losing on kicks from the penalty mark at the 2007 U-14 Cup as the main source of inspiration for players in their victory.
Laval's starting XI in the final was goalkeeper Miximilien Carle, Mathew Alfonzetti, Martin Dagenais, Steve Boursiquot, Ricky Cobein, Patrick Fusarini, Gregory Holland, Daniel Lamarre, Nicolas Mathieu-Fernandez, Robert Renaud, and Riggi.
In the girls' final, the Royal scored early and often. Léa Chastenay-Joseph spearheaded Beauport’s fearsome attack, scoring five goals in the match before she was substituted midway through the second half.
"It feels very good to be national champions," said Beauport head coach Marie-Pier Bilodeau. "We are so proud of the girls. We feel that the depth of our squad was one of the keys to our victory. We lost key players to injuries, but others were able to step up and perform."
Beauport’s starting XI in the final was goalkeeper Joelle Morasse, Mélissa Roy, Joelle Gosselin, Stéphanie Fortin, Chastenay-Joseph, Karine Pelletier, Esther Rochon, Mia-Lynn Cossette, Myriam Dumont, Gabrielle Davis, and Carol-Ann Ferlatte.
"BMO Financial Group, Canada’s Soccer Bank, is proud to be a big supporter of the beautiful game of soccer," said John C. MacAulay, Vice President, Manitoba and North-western Ontario District, Personal & Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal. "BMO employees and soccer fans alike have been thrilled with the level of competition at the BMO National Championships here in Winnipeg. We are proud of these exceptional athletes and want to thank all the volunteers who helped stage such a stellar competition,"
The top four teams in the boys competition were Conquérant Laval, SWU Premiers, Ajax Gunners and Winnipeg South End United. Alessandro Riggi of Laval won the Top Goal Scorer award, Laval won the BMO Goal Saver award, and Fredericton District won the Fair Play award.
The top four teams in the girls competition were Royal-Sélect de Beauport, Ajax United Magic, Sherwood Park Phoenix SC and Scotia. Léa Chastenay-Joseph of the Royal won the Top Goal Scorer award, Beauport won the BMO Top Goal Saver award, and Hollandia Tigers won the Fair Play award.
BMO Financial Group is proud to support soccer at all levels across Canada, from grassroots to Canada’s national teams. Starting with sponsorship of more than 400 Canadian youth teams to the title support of elite youth players at the BMO National Championships, through to the professional-team support (Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC) and sponsorship of the Canadian men’s and women’s national soccer teams, BMO Financial Group is serious about Canadian soccer.
